OCEANSIDE, CA – A plane crashed in the Oceanside area of San Diego County on Saturday injuring the 24-year-old pilot Amadeep Singh and his 18-year-old passenger, Harshdeep Multani. The cause of the plane crash is still under investigation; however, it apparently encountered mechanical trouble and was attempting to make an emergency landing when it hit a utility pole and crashed to the ground. Though no structures were damaged and no other injuries were reported, the plane did hit a nearby sewage valve, spilling about 25,000 gallons of raw sewage onto the wreckage site.
Emergency crews from the Oceanside Fire Department and nearby Camp Pendleton as well as the county’s hazardous-material squad used pump trucks to remove most of the spilled sewage. About 15 emergency workers, who were exposed to the hazard while rescuing the occupants, had to be decontaminated at the scene.
The passenger was easily pulled out of the plane, but it took nearly an hour to extricate the pilot. Both were taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The Cessna 172 plane involved was registered to California Flight Academy in El Cajon and was destined from Gillespie Field in El Cajon to Torrance Municipal Airport. The flight school is still trying to gather information about the crash.
