FONTANA, CALIFORNIA – A recent street race ended by taking the life of Irene Beatriz Porras, 19, of Fontana, and hurting her infant child, who was thrown from the car. Ms. Porras and her child were in the vehicle with Eric Escobedo when he decided to race another car. Eric lost control of his Toyota Camry and flipped the car, killing this mother and teacher’s aide.
The reckless driver, Eric Escobedo, was taken into custody in Riverside County, on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter. Importantly, in addition to pursuing criminal punishment for this type of behavior, the civil justice system also allows for recovery on behalf of plaintiffs. Specifically, in a situation such as this Ms. Porras’ child may recover monetary damages in a lawsuit against Eric Escobedo, for example. In order to protect the interests of victims and their families it is important to contact an experienced attorney promptly following such an incident.
