COMMON BACK INJURIES FOLLOWING AUTO ACCIDENTS

AUTO ACCIDENT PRACTICE – Back injuries are one of the most common injuries that people experience following an auto accident. Back injuries can range from being minor in nature to serious and debilitating, and may even go undetected for some time following an accident. Therefore, it is extremely important to see a doctor if you experience any type of back pain following a trauma incident such as an auto accident. If left untreated, even minor back injuries can severely limit an individuals ability to function on a day-to-day basis.

Below are a few of the more common back injuries:

• Strains and Sprains

A strain is a stretched or torn muscle or tendon. Tendons are essentially tissues that connect muscle to bone. It is the twisting or pulling of these tissues that can result in a strain. A sprain is a stretched or torn ligament. Ligaments are tissues that connect bones at the joint. Similar to a strain, a sprain can be caused by twisting or sudden impact.

• Herniated Discs and Sciatica

Our backbones are made up of several bones that have soft disks in between them. A herniated disc occurs when one of these discs slips out of place. Sometimes it can press on a nerve, which then causes additional pain often referred to as sciatica.

• Compression Fractures

Compression fractures occur when the spine is compressed in such a manner that it collapses. Individuals with compression fractures often note a loss in their overall height.

Treatment for these common back injuries are wide-ranging and can include anti-inflammatory medicines, physical therapy, chiropractic treatment and sometimes surgery. Thankfully, most people do recover when treatment is provided in a timely manner. That is why it is so important to see your doctor directly following an auto accident.
