A northbound BNSF freight train struck a pedestrian around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday. The man struck by the train suffered severe injuries, but was expected to survive. The incident occurred in the 200 block of Mission Avenue.
Although weather would not permit a medical helicopter to land for immediate evacuation, the man was conscious and breathing while being transported to the hospital via ambulance. The San Diego County sheriff’s department provided what little information was currently known and they continue to investigate the possible cause of the accident.
This is at least the second similar incident reported this year after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a freight train at an Oceanside crossing in January. The victim of the January incident, Jason Alan Frank, was hit by a northbound BNSF train and thrown a short distance into a dirt gully along the tracks. Despite resuscitative efforts, Frank died at the scene at a Mission Avenue crossing near North Cleveland Street.
