California is known for having many devastating wildfires, some destroying thousands of acres. While some of these fires are due to dry conditions and natural causes, other times there are people and/or companies to blame. When that is the case, and there has been a wrongful death, severe personal injury, or even loss of property, victims may be able to recover financially through the civil justice system.
San Diego experienced severe fires in 2007, and it is estimated that the San Diego Gas and Electric Company and Cox Communications may face up to $1.5 billion in damages for their alleged role in starting the Witch Creek, Guejito, and Rice Canon fires. Those fires destroyed more than 1, 300 homes, and killed two individuals. Proving these cases often requires experts on fires, including engineers. Ultimately in order to prevail in such cases plaintiffs must establish that poor maintenance of power lines or inadequate tree clearance next to utilities lead to the fires. An experienced attorney will be able to help develop these lawsuits.
